Travel & Stay
To our American and international friends and family, we’re so sorry to be doing a destination wedding... But if you don't come to France, we will be deeply and irrevocably offended. Mati is from there and you aren’t allowed to make any snide comments (if you do, make them to the French; most of them won’t understand and won’t try to). We’re not sending you to Punta Cana for some meretricious Lūʻau wedding. This is France. It’s classy.
To our French friends and family, Buongiorno. [This is Jimmy].
Once You're There
We’re excited to share a few of our favorite places in the area with you. If you have any questions at all about how to get here and where to stay, please reach out to us!
Getting There
There are myriad options to get to the Dordogne, and it’s largely dependent on whether you intend to come directly or make a trip out of it and travel more broadly before/after the wedding.
By Flight
The closest large airport is in Bordeaux [BDX] (~2.5 hr drive), but Toulouse airport [TLS] is roughly equidistant as well. From Paris, it’s about a 6 hr drive to Dordogne.
There are also very small regional airports in Bergerac [EGC] and Brive [BVE] that are ~1 hr drive.
When coming from the US, it is often cheapest to fly to a large hub like Paris or London and then use an intra-European budget airline like Ryanair or EasyJet to fly to Bordeaux, Bergerac, etc.
By Car
Dordogne is a very rural region of France, and as such isn't very well connected. We recommend renting a car if you are planning on staying for a couple of days. Driving from an airport will give you a lot more flexibility!
By Train
The closest train station is Sarlat La Canéda, which is accessible directly from Bordeaux. From Paris, we recommend going to Souillac (~ 30 min drive).

Finding a place to stay
Booking a place to stay can be a little more difficult given the limited English spoken in the area and the lack of a centralized accommodation platform.
Airbnb/VRBO have good options, but tend to be booked out far in advanced. The best villages to stay in (in descending order, and according to Jimmy) are: Domme, La-Roque-Gageac, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, Beynac, and Sarlat. All are roughly a 20-minute drive from the wedding venue.
Aggregation booking sites like Booking.com list most hotels and BnBs in the area as well. The primary town in the area is Sarlat-la-Canéda so it is generally a good idea to use it as a search term.

Activities
We’ll update the activities page with more detailed information closer to the wedding date.
We’re planning a day-long canoe trip on Thursday Aug. 29th, and we’ll organize group hot air balloon rides through the Dordogne Valley leaving from the venue chateau if there is sufficient interest (prices are ~€250/person; photos here). Relatedly, the word for ‘hot air balloon’ in French is Montgolfière, which is just some dude’s name. That’s like us calling an airplane a ‘Wright’. And they say our language is stupid… Anyways, there is plenty to do in the area (just ask the hordes of Dutch that sojourn down every summer in processions of RVs). Man, if there are 2 things I hate in this world, they are people intolerant of other cultures and the Dutch.
Again anyways, there are two preserved 12th century castles in the area, several newer castles (still older than the sovereign state of the U.S.), vineyards and wineries in the nearby Bordeaux region, several medieval towns, incredible food, caves with well-preserved prehistoric petroglyphs, mountain-biking, kayaking/paddle boarding, and French people.
